Andrew-Lee Potts ('Primeval')
interview
Andrew-Lee Potts returns this month as Connor Temple in the fifth series of time-travelling dinosaur drama Primeval, exclusive to Watch.
After returning home from the Cretaceous period, Connor finds himself with a battle on his hands - save the world or save the team...
How does Series 5 start for Connor?
"Well, he’s working for Prospero as well as at the ARC, under the watchful eye of Philip. His relationship with Abby is starting to fall apart, as it is with the rest of the team. He still gets involved with the team’s work on a day-to-day basis, but he’s conflicted at the start of this series on which path to take. He loves working with Abby and helping the creatures back to safety, but there’s this billionaire scientist who thinks he’s a genius, who pampers his ego and gently pushes him in the directions he wants him to.
"He just doesn’t know what to do. All he wants to do is finish the work Cutter started, and he told him he wouldn’t let him down. When he lost Cutter he lost a big role model, and I suppose he’s still searching for that."
What can you tell us about New Dawn?
"What I believe Connor is doing is generating and harnessing free energy so it can be green and free for everyone. So there won’t be any more wars, no more people fighting over fuel and Philip will give this energy out for free. And no more anomalies either. So it’s a win-win. The reality is very different. Connor makes a big breakthrough that could change the world, but it makes him scared at the power he’s created."
Connor has always been an idealist, how does he feel about the choices put in front of him in this series?
"He stands to lose everything that’s important to him and has worked so hard to build. It’s not getting greedy or anything like that, but he’s more obsessed with the idea of making the world better. He loses sight of his reality and the whole scenario. And the biggest thing he stands to lose is the love of his life."
How does this new project affect his relationship with Abby?
"Hugely. This is a big deal for these two - a potential full-on breakdown of trust and communication. They get pushed to breaking point."
What kind of predators will you be dealing with in Series 5?
"I know that the first one is Spinosaurus, which was awesome because we got to film in the O2 in Ireland. I was harnessed on a rope and pulled up and down and all sorts. It’s something you don’t do every day! Sometimes the green screen can be tedious, because the magic that they add on we don’t see for a long time. The actual realism of the show is very different to what you see on telly - we film with eye lines and green screens and a lot of things we have to use our imaginations for."
Have you enjoyed filming in Ireland?
"Hannah and I, as a couple, have been very lucky because we got to come over as a unit - Hannah, me and our little dog Stanley. Dublin’s an awesome place to work. I filmed here last year and I really liked it, so when I got told we were shooting in Dublin I was really pleased."
